Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD

Kingston have always been up there in the ranks of memory chip makers such as Corsair and OCZ, and as of late they have been really pushing their SSD technology to keep up with OCZ who currently in our eyes running the quickest benchmarks on their Sandforce controlled units.

Their units are a little pricey, but offer the blistering speeds of 534MB/sec read and 514MB/sec write, then you’re in for a pretty dang fast loading time for windows 7 :-)  For the best performance of this SSD, we have found that it’s best to stay away from Marvell, JMicron and ASMedia sata 3.0 controllers.

X79…….. YAY!

So we finally get to have a play with one of the new X79 Motherboards this week.  The ASUS Sabertooth X79 to be exact

Put with that a Core i7 – 3930K, 16GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM and a couple of Asus Geforce GTS 450′s in SLi and we had a bit of fun.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit edition installed from a USB 3 pen drive in roughly 9 minutes flat onto the 6GBPs Seagate Barracuda drive.  Anyway… that’s the boring bit….. now for the good stuff.  Crysis 2 :-)
As I’m sure most of you are aware, Crysis 2 has got one of the best and most detailed graphic engines written to date, and with a couple of DX11 GPU’s and the tesselation pack installed….. looks properly out of this world!  Even though it’s only in Extreme graphics mode with no 3D, it really does run smoothly on this system.

We look forward to your comments on this post.

Recent Hard Drive Price Hikes

By now, everyone should know why hard disk prices are hiking up as much as 50% in a matter of days. It’s been said that majority of  hard disks are manufactured in Thailand, but due to the flooding has caused a serious shortage the hardware market… and a pretty big one too!

Most of the major hard disk companies such as Western Digital and Seagate have commented that their factories have been flooded and a vast amount of production kit needs replacing. Western Digital has announced that it might fall short of its goal of producing the planned 58 million units. Instead, WD projected that it will only reach as much as 22 to 26 million units by the end of the year.

So does this mean that you should go Solid State???

SSD’s still overshadow the HDD market when it comes to price, but with prices of HDD’s set to continue rising over the coming months I’d say that I would be tempted.

Nvidia SLi with DX11

For those of you out there with a couple of mid to high end DX11 Nvidia GPUs… Try changing the SLi so that you have one card running the Physx side of things.  I found this made tons of difference on Crysis 2, I could actually run the game with full AA at 1080p.
